(Am E F C
Am E F C G G#)

It’s spring of 2013 and this
Winter’s almost past, that snowman
I built out of ash won’t melt, cos’
It was built to last
The end had felt near for so long, the
US got bored and launched some bombs
And got nuked back by everyone
‘cos politicians are morons

And hiding in the Metro here
Has kept us safe from harm, but now
We’re running low on baked beans, and
This train car smells like farts
So we venture to the surface to see
What it holds in store, and when
Our eyes adjust; behold what’s left
Of a world that is no more

We wade through the debris downtown
To the old 9:30 club, and since
No one was in we cleaned it up
And claimed it as our home and hub
We made our beds from dirty clothes
We found out in the street, and as
We closed our eyes the ghosts of DC punks
Rocked us to sleep

When we awoke we felt as if
We’d shed a metric ton, no more did
We feel like the world had ended:
It had just begun
With no more cops and no more jobs
And no society, our lives were
Truly in our own damn hands;
We finally were free

(A Adim D A)

Now we’re living the dream in this apocalyptic wasteland
We got a lot of time to kill; but at least it dies by our hands
And we’ll start again from sticks and stones, I’m thinking
We can do it right this time

So we teach ourselves to cook and craft and
Leaven us some bread, and we go
Scavenge the Smithsonians; put
Allosaurus in our den; we
Play dress-up with Lincoln’s hat and George
Washington’s pants and we snag
Pollocks, Eschers and Picassos, and
The Star-Spangled Banner

One day when we’re spray painting dicks
On the walls of the White House, we ran
Into some guys who just had left
Their bunker, and didn’t know how
To start anew in this decaying city
So we say, “come on back to our house
With us, we’ll clean you up and
Have you fed.”

They thank us but decline; said their friends
Wouldn’t know where they were, and so we say
That they should bring them all, too:
The more the merrier!
So they all come back to our place, and we
Have a grand ol’ feast, and it turns out
That they play music, too, so we jam
Til’ the sun salutes D.C.

And we’re living the dream in this apocalyptic wasteland
We got a lot of time to kill; but at least it dies by our hand
And we’ll start again from sticks and stones, you know,
I think we’ll get it right this time

It’s been a fun few weeks living with our new friends but
Radiation’s got them so sick they can’t leave their bed
We wish we could go on like this, but our food is at it’s end
‘cos someone’s stealing it from us and now we are defending

So goodbye to anarchy, we gotta do the right thing
And install some social system so our friends survive the spring
But we’ll strive to make sure that ours is as fair as it can be
One that at least grants us some illusion that we are still free
